Institute of science and technology (IST) in Austria is a world-class basic science research institute in the heart of Europe. Doctoral education offers a US-style graduate school experience, in which students are admitted to the PhD program, rather than individual research groups, and only select their PhD supervisors after a year of rotations and a unique interdisciplinary training program.
IST Austria offers excellent infrastructure, an English-speaking and internationally diverse community, and proximity to Vienna, consistently ranked as one of the most desirable cities to live in the world.
Scientists require multidisciplinary skillsets and indepth knowledge of their research area to be able to carry out excellent research. At IST Austria, our mission is to equip students with the technical know-how and skills to communicate and perform research across disciplines. This interdisciplinary spirit is fundamental to the excellence of scientific research conducted at IST Austria. The PhD program at IST Austria is therefore designed with both breadth and depth of scope in mind.
